Using XRF on dried blood spot samples to analyze toxic metal exposure
A new study is using XRF to measure the heavy metals in our bodies in innovative & minimally invasive ways. Aaron Specht, assistant professor at Purdue University, is using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers, including Malvern Panalytical’s Epsilon 4 system, to detect toxic metals in dried blood samples collected on filter paper without destroying them. Specht is currently leading a study that aims to shine new light on the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) and four toxic elements in particular: lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium. This research has wide-ranging potential for the future monitoring of toxic metal exposure, ultimately helping make our world cleaner, healthier and more productive. Modeling invisible plastics
You probably know what nano and microplastics are. Yes, very very small pieces of plastic. They are thought to originate from a variety of human activities, like cosmetics, clothing, industrial processes, and recycling. They are finding their way into all places on the planet, our land, seas and in living creatures, such as fish. Recently, they have also been found in human placentas. Florine Aalders at Malvern Panalytical characterised and classified the nano and microplastics that float around our planet to help a team of leading scientists in the Momentum consortium answer to important questions. Above all, how are these nano- and microplastics affecting our human species? You can also find out more about Momentum here https://momentummicroplastics.nl/ We are proud to be making a small but critical contribution by making the invisible visible we trust the project will have a positive impact on human health.
